Geeky and proud of it - How to download or rip HD YouTube Clips.

Kanye is doing it, you can too

Seems like this entry gets a lot of attention so here's a run down of how to rip or download or copy or save the 720p or HD video clips from YouTube. I mean, afterall... Kanye is doing it, why can't you?!

1. Make sure the video is already in HD mode. Click the HD button in the YouTube frame.
2. Highlight the below selection with your mouse cursor.

javascript:window.location.href = 'http://youtube.com/get_video?video_id=' + swfArgs['video_id'] + "&fmt=22" + "&l=" + swfArgs['l'] + "&sk=" + swfArgs['sk'] + '&t=' + swfArgs['t'];

3. Press CTRL + C or right click on the selection and press "Copy".
4. Return to your YouTube video and highlight your browsers address bar.
5. Press CTRL + V or right click on the selection and press "Paste".
6. Press Enter!
7. You will be prompted with a download window. Press OK yo!
8. Enjoy HD Videos!

It is that easy! A 3-minute music video is typically around 80MB and downloads fairly quickly so you can see that your video library is about to grow ten fold, provided you have enough space on your PC!

Hope it helps you out! Thank me if you like, if you do you'll win 10 Internets.

Update: It's come to my attention that there is a firefox plug-in that adds a little download button below the video. Click here to get it. Otherwise the above process still works.

Update 2: Thank you to a commenter who suggests adding the code to a bookmark on either Firefox or IE. This is a pretty good solution too as you won't have to keep visiting my awful website.

    This may digress from the topic but i didn't know where to ask. I bought my girlfriend and ipod and have been looking for cheap music for her. I found some good songs on Walmarts music service but when I downloaded they will not upload to her ipod, ap...

    Hi Sasha,

    The only thing I can think of is that it's restricted to playback on the computer only. There are places you can find ways around it but it may be quicker to just download a program called 'Audacity' and rip directly from your computers Soundcard.

    Good luck.

    Nicely done. But a bit of a fail for everyone since no one seemed to notice that it's not 'ctrl + P' to paste..it's 'ctrl + V'...way to go guys. 'ctrl + P' is to print btw.

    In no OS that I know of, Windows included, is Control-P paste. It's Control-V. (Or Command-V, for us Mac users)

    However, beyond that pedantic gripe, good article. Thanks!

    You could also use this as a bookmarklet, paste the code as the destination address and use it whenever you are at the page.

    Yeh Nimz, Just make sure you click the HD Button at the bottom of the video. This code doesn't work for Standard Definition videos. I just tested it with HD and it's still fine :)

    Or you could download Firefox, install the Greasemonkey plugin and load the "YouTube enhancer script and just click the "download video" button.

    It also allows you to view varying resolutions that are regularly not available on YouTube. I likes this much better!

    Firefox - http://www.getfirefox.com
    Greasemonkey plugin - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
    YouTube Enhancer - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/33042

    Viola!

    Everything seems to work fine for me, but when the file finishes downloading, there is no video. The audio is there but the screen is just black. Would you happen to know why it's like that?

    maybe this is helpfull for ya guys ... use the link that was posted here but modify it so u can also download HQ instead of HD movies ..

    javascript:window.location.href = 'http://youtube.com/get_video?video_id=' + swfArgs['video_id'] + "&fmt=22" + "&l=" + swfArgs['l'] + "&sk=" + swfArgs['sk'] + '&t=' + swfArgs['t'];

    notice the "&fmt=22" part .. u can change the number at the end to make it compatible with HQ ones just change it to "&fmt=18" and it should download the hq's also but beware the links only work for the selected value of the javascript-line so with the fmt=18 u CANT download the HD ones ...
    cheers... all hope u found this usefull too..

    on side note: it should work with normal quality even but i wasnt able to get it to run yet on firefox .. use "&fmt=6" for this
